Press release -

One million people renew their tax credits

Thousands of people have already used the tax credit online renewal service in the early hours of the morning, new statistics reveal today.

More than 17,000 people have already used the HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) tax credits online service between midnight and 6am since April, while more than one million people have renewed across all channels.

This all-hours online service has proved very popular, with more than 8 in 10 people using it saying they were happy with the process. On average, it takes just 15 minutes to renew online.

Nick Lodge, HMRC’s Director General, Benefits and Credits, said:

"This year, everyone can renew their tax credits online at a time to suit them. This secure online service is quicker than calling us at busy times.

“So far, more than one million claimants have renewed their tax credits and reported changes. Anybody who needs to renew should take action now and go online.”

HMRC is sending out 5.9 million tax credits renewals packs which will arrive by 30 June. So far, over 220,000 people have renewed and made changes online, which is more than treble the number compared to the same time last year.
