  • Payroll fraudsters jailed for 22 years

    The bosses of a corrupt payroll company that stole millions of pounds of VAT have been jailed for more than 22 years. West Lothian-based Linear Services handled payroll for 27 employment agencies but didn’t hand over VAT they owed to HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) during a two-year fraud. Graeme Cullen, Leslie Thompson, Graham Newall and Martin Lang ran the firm that charged VAT on invoices.

  • Pensioners urged to be alert to Winter Fuel Payment scams

    Pensioners are being warned to be on high alert for scams as the recovery of Winter Fuel Payments begins this month. Almost two million people are expected to repay their winter 2025 payment due to their annual income being more than £35,000 – for most, an automatic process. HMRC saw more than 25,000 Winter Fuel Payment scam referrals over the last 12 months.

  • Businesses targeted across Britain as part of till fraud probe

    More than 20 takeaways and restaurants in Edinburgh, London, St Helens and Stoke have been subject to unannounced visits as part of a crackdown on electronic till fraud. The action by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) officers took place over the last four weeks, with 24 hot food takeaways and restaurants targeted.

    HM Revenue and Customs’ (HMRC) Edinburgh Regional Centre and UK Government hub was formally opened today (1 September 2022) by Secretary of State for Scotland, Alister Jack MP.

  • Glasgow Regional Centre formally opens

    HM Revenue and Customs’ (HMRC) Glasgow Regional Centre and UK Government hub was formally opened by Jim Harra, HMRC’s First Permanent Secretary and Chief Executive on 6 June 2022. The state-of-the-art building at 1 Atlantic Square, which also accommodates the Cabinet Office’s second Headquarters, is currently home to about 2,600 HMRC and around 270 Cabinet Office full time equivalent (FTE) roles.

    HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has formally signed an agreement to lease a ten storey new build, at 1 Atlantic Square, Argyle Street in Glasgow, for 25 years. HMRC will be one of the largest employers in the city, adding value to the local economy and forming strong relationships with the community.
